Hi peeps,

It has been forever since I updated, I know. Taking two classes on top of work was a lot more than I anticipated. I really enjoyed exploring textiles and writing essays this semester. Next semester I have a figure drawing class and more essay writing! It's nice to have a Christmas break coming up.

I will be moving the site to a new host in the new year, so there will be some service disruption. I really was overpaying by hosting with Telus, but it was so much easier to not have to move a 6GB site and just pay the piper :-)

There is a new graphic novel out about Hunter S. Thompson called Gonzo. The novel is biographical and I can't wait to pick up a copy, although I'm not too keen on the art style from the previews I have seen. HST has had the comic book treatment a few times over the years, but rarely has it been biographical.

If you have an Android phone (like moi! Go open source!) you can set up a news widget to get news about HST right on your phone along with the weather and local news. Just open the widget, choose Settings > News Settings and add Hunter S. Thompson as a topic.

I'm not sure if this is the first time this old video has popped up on YouTube, but it made the front page of Disinformation a few weeks ago. I used to love reading up on all the conspiracy theories on that site - and it makes me feel old. It also makes me feel old that my copy of The Crazy Never Die is on VHS. It's easy to forget when the internet was just a novelty and not something ingrained in people's every day lives!

Part one is embedded below; part two is also available on YouTube.

Whew! Lots of linkage today. I can't believe I sat on posting these for so long...well, actually I can!

Here's a Canadian Broadcasting Company clip of HST defending Hells Angels with a...Hells Angel. I had no idea the CBC had this goodie in its archive.

Breakfast With Hunter Volume 2 is also coming out on July 13 from Wayne Ewing.

I liked this article, "Mild Dread and Some Aversion in Aspen". I'd still like to visit Colorado some day and see the other side of the Rockies...but I think Aspen would be way out of my league. The ritziest thing I have is a Coach purse and that probably wouldn't even do :-D

An enterprising blogger decided to make use of FOIA and found out that the CIA does not have a file on HST. He's still awaiting a reply from the FBI. I'm intrigued!

This seems pretty morbid, but Amazon lists a DVD available for pre-order for Thompson, Hunter S. - Final 24: His Final Hours. The thought is so unnappealing that I don't even want to entertain more research into it.

Gregory Ego posts some pictures of HST at a booksigning in Denver from a few years ago in his blog. It's hard to believe that all those booksignings were ten years ago now.

And lastly, you're nobody if you're not immmortalized in Lego:

This project looks very interesting - it seems a spoken word version of The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved is in the works.

The article notes that this is not a compilation but the whole article. Long time gonzo fans may remember a spoken word rendition of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas that pre-dated the movie from Margaritaville Records. It featured Jim Jarmusch and was released in honour of FLLV's 25th anniversary. Hmm, it seems like I don't even have an old copy of that page on the site, but I remember it was pretty good.

I made a fascinating discovery tonight (via MetaFilter) that you can find old magazines as well as books on Google Books. I haven't really checked the magazine part, but here are some gonzo books that have previews that can be read online. As a bonus, the books are also searchable! Whew, I could have used that 14 years ago.

Hell's Angels (this looks like full-view).

Well, if you haven't heard it yet, clickez vous. The audio is rather NSFW, so don some headphones or wait until you get home.

This is a great article on HST became imprisoned in his own persona over the years.

Sweet!

Sometimes the universe drops us messages. Sometimes the meaning might be a little fuzzy at the time, but eventually all is revealed. I had the strangest dream this morning, that I was reading thick, musty, yellowed HST paperback and in the foreground, what I was reading was being narrated as a documentary about HST's life. Some of the things were pretty weird, and I'm pretty sure they didn't happen :-D Especially the scene of Canadian mounties at a funeral, saluting a flag draped coffin, which is where I woke up.

Then on my way to work I passed a local independent cinema and what do I see? A poster for Gonzo under Coming Soon. Cool! Keep your eyes peeled here Cowtown fans!

I have emailed Magnolia Pictures, hopefully they can tell me if there are more Canadian playdates.

Conversations with Hunter S. Thompson is a new collection of interviews edited by Beef Torrey and Kevin P. Simonson, who interviewed HST on several occasions for SPIN, Hustler and the Village Voice.

Don't forget about William McKeen's new book, Outlaw Journalist as well. If you're on Facebook, you can keep abreast of updates.

Josh tracked down a spiffy link that shows where Alex Gibney's Gonzo movie will be showing.

And what the heck, here's a link to Reason's review of Gonzo.

"Hi there,

I thought you'd appreciate this interview with Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney about his new documentary, "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson."

Slate (which I used to abhor) has a whole special on procrastination. My workplace, which has had several presentations on Getting Things Done, which seems to be built on the industry of lazy people, has only helped me somewhat. It's not that I'm lazy, I'm quite an industrious person, but email brings a special burden because I can't possibly hope to answer it all. And replies only beget more replies! I realized today it is simply that I enjoying putting more energy into other things than email. If I could afford a Blackberry, I could be more productive on my daily 2 hour bus ride, but ah well...

Enough rambling, here's what's new:

William McKeen, author of a previous book on HST, has a new book out called Outlaw Journalist which will be out June 24 according to Amazon.

Josh snapped a couple pics of a cool mural back in April. Wonder if it's still up...(thanks Josh!)

I was driving around town yesterday and spotted this...its pretty bad ass.

The building its on is under construction, and is some type of restraunt titled "Cherch". Its the only visable thing having to do with HST....and really makes very little since with its surroundings.

So heres some pics, it can be found in Downtown Fullerton, CA on the corner of Commonwealth and Harbor.

One of the buggers about night classes is that I end up staying up all night despite being dog tired, but I guess that's a good thing for anyone reading this.

OK, here we go, a web mag called Radar posted a pic and some analysis of HST's appearance in the Converse ads. And there's some commentage on BoingBoing. I don't know how to feel about a branded sneaker, but it's better than, say, gonzo branded underwear. Gawker also chimes in.

Oh, and William F. Buckley passed away.

I haven't found the visuals yet, but Converse plans to use HST, among celebrities, in their spring 2008 campaign. Full press release here here.

The most obvious answer is usually the simplest one, or maybe it's the other way around. Anyway, I'm just loving this little image gallery script that lets me pop the pictures in and takes care of everything :-)

Catching up on email again, I found a note from the webmaster of Ron Whitehead's website, who is a friend of HST. Ron is also a Kentucky native and HST once called him "crazy as nine loons".

And of course, reviews on Jann Wenner and Corey Seymour's book never seem to stop! I haven't read it yet because I'm too busy soldering 5 mm jump rings and hammering them into submission, among other things, but Honolulu writer Charles Memminger was not impressed.

The Aspen Times has a preview of The Kitchen Readings, Untold Stories of Hunter S. Thompson written by HST's friends Michael Cleverly and Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis.

This wasn't quite on my radar, but writer and director Blue Kraning's film Blasted!!! is now available on DVD from his website. It's a look at some of the cannon owners who submitted essays as to why their cannon would be most suitable for launching HST's ashes. The YouTube links don't work on the site, but here's the link for them.

My friend Mr. B sent me a bunch of links for postification -

Ain't It Cool News - the Roman Polanski documentary sounds good too.

Studio Monthly

Then of course there's always the IMDb page.

I spent a few hours in the studio again this weekend and I'll probably be there again this upcoming one. April can't come fast enough :-)

I guess it's coming out sooner than I thought...or at least it's been screened sooner than I thought. Check out the film's page on The Sundance Festival's website for more info.
